Youngsters who develop a love of reading early in life acquire a more solid foundation for learning that later assists them in creating opportunities for a more fulfilling life.

We see an opportunity to harness the love of reading by those lending and borrowing ebooks. By making ebooks more affordable for those who have difficulty paying full retail, we provide value that they can elect to return with an occasional contribution to support our childhood literacy cause.

So, first and foremost, we're doing this for the children.

But we also feel that buyers of ebooks deserve the same rights as those who buy paper books. In the long run we'll use our momentum to benefit our members, too.

Ultimately, by opening up the ebook licensing restrictions that publishers currently impose, we'll be able to make ebooks available to an expanded number of markets. We'll be able to reduce ebook prices to many while helping authors earn more. But we will still funnel any profits toward promoting childhood literacy.

As we see it:

Wide availability of inexpensive of e-readers has fueled an appetite for ebooks that is being throttled by organizations determined to adhere to last century's business paradigms.
