The Guide

  1. Overview
  2. Listing a book
  3. Borrowing a book

These sections take you through the processes of listing and borrowing an ebook.

At first glance, they may seem complicated, but they're really not. And besides, unlike many people, you read, which means you're probably smarter than the average bear!

You don't have to be tech savvy--we'll make it easy. We'll guide you every step of the way.

How it works: Overview

You can use eBook Exchange to lend and borrow books purchased from BarnesAndNoble.com or Amazon.com. In the future, we'll provide the same functionality for Google ebooks and Apple ibooks.

100% of eBook Exchange profits in 2011 will go to charities focused on childrens' literacy and fostering a love of reading as an education multiplier. To maximize contributions, our founder has agreed to take only a $1/month salary for 2011. Lend an ebook; do some good.

Loaning Kindle™ ebooks

To loan out a Kindle ebook that you purchased (licensed) from Amazon, you log into your Amazon account in a web browser, go to your account page and then into your Kindle Orders history. Next to each lendable book is a button that says "Loan this book" if it's available for loan. See below.

How to tell if an ebook is lendable

Lending out your Nook™ ebooks

You will use the the LendMe™ functionality that Barnes & Noble provides for their Nook™ ebooks to introduce others to your favorite authors by granting them access to your book for fourteen days. When you're ready to lend an ebook, you list it on eBook Exchange where it becomes available to other members. We're like a cross between a library and a used-book store that takes advantage of digital age capabilities!

At the end of the loan period your ebook reverts to you--you haven't lost anything at all, and you've done others some good!

The transfer

eBook Exchange never takes possession or ownership of the ebook when it's loaned from a lender to a borrower. Access to the ebook (but not the digital rights) passes directly from the lender to the borrower through the bookseller's platform. Transfers use mechanisms provided by Amazon.com or BarnesAndNoble.com. eBook Exchange simply matches up borrowers and lenders and facilitates transactions allowed under the terms of your ebook license.

A note about selling your Kindle™ or Nook™ ebooks

eBook Exchange does not support this type of transaction. Currently, transfering ebook digital rights to another is against both the Amazon and Barnes & Noble license agreements, which you accept when you purchase an ebook. Ebook Exchange is committed to working on your behalf toward better and fairer ebook licensing rights.

Next step: Listing a book.
